You want a high quality fabric that will last for years so it is important to find a high thread count fabric that is durable. Avoid fabrics like silk or satin for a tablecloth because they are not well suited. If you are interested in using fine fabrics then consider making a runner out of them. Overall, it simply makes more sense to use a durable cotton or polyester blend that will last for years while looking great.

Of course, if the tablecloth is for special occasions only then you do not need to concern yourself with quality as much as you do design, color, and price. These are just a few tips to help you find the right fabric to make a tablecloth. Be sure you have measured your table and know its exact dimensions so you can buy the right amount of cloth. Otherwise, you will have a problem because you will have to sew extra pieces onto the cloth and this will take away from its appearance.

How to Measure Tables For Tablecloths

I have been in the tablecloth industry selling to all types of facilities for over 10 years, such as, party rental stores, hotels, restaurants, caterers, banquet halls, churches and anyone else who uses dining facilities.

Most know how to measure for tablecloths but for those that don't this is how to measure for round, square and rectangle tables.

Rectangle tables are generally in 3 lengths 48, 72 and 96 inches long and are referred to as banquet tables and 6-ft or 8-ft tables as the most used. While the average table is 30 inches wide some vary with widths of 18, 24 and 36. Square tables would follow the same formula.

Now you need to determine your facilities' need for a drop, which there is no standard. How the tablecloth needs to look on the table is personal and by choice. Some want the cloth to cover just the top with a little drop others want it to go to the floor. A general guideline is 10" to the lap, 15" to the bottom of the chair or halfway down the table and 30" is to the floor, if in fact the table measures 30" high. Although nursing facilities only want a 4" drop to accommodate wheelchairs. Note any cloth that goes to the floor should have rounded corners to avoid jutting out and creating a means to have someone trip.

Once you determine what drop is best for your facility then you need to add that measurement to the table measurements. For example your table measures 30x72x30, which means width, length (table top on both and height. You want a 10 inch drop you would add as follows 10+10+30= 50 and 10+10+72= 92 so the tablecloth you need is 50x92, now some companies only offer standard sizes so go up to a 54x96 if you cannot get the exact size you need.

This formula work for all tables for rounds you would add the drop of 10" to the diameter. Example 60" round or 60R add 10+10+60= 80 round or 80R cloth.

For measuring skirting, Determine whether you want to cover 3 or 4 sides then add the table measurements, 4 sides of a 6-ft banquet. 30+30+72+72= 204 inches then convert to feet or 17-ft. For 3 sides 30+30+72= 132 inches or 11-ft. Many vendors require skirting is purchased in increments of 2 this is because skirting is cut the length of goods and not width and most fabrics are wider than 60 inches.

To measure skirting for round skirting take the circumference of the table and times by pie then divide by 12 5 x 3.14 = 15.7 or 16ft of skirting.

Always take into consideration whether your tables have squared or rounded corners as 1/4" may make a difference in how tablecloths lie on the table.

Ask if your vendor if you measured correctly but most manufacturers won't recommend a drop as this is your decision and ultimately your responsibility if the cloths don't fit. So learning what your facility needs or how the cloths should look and how to measure will insure you correct fitting tablecloths.

As far as color goes, your cloth should coordinate with your dining room colors and not necessarily reflect the occasion you are celebrating. That way you can use it for a variety of occasions and it will always compliment you homes décor. The food should be the focal point of your table, do not select a cloth with a busy pattern or print that will take away from what is on the menu.

Use accessories like napkin rings, a centerpiece, candle holders or a table runner to indicate the theme of the party. If the themes colors (green for Saint Patricks' Day or red for Christmas) do not fit in with your room setting then go with neutral accessories that look good with your décor. You can still make it special and festive setting by using fun, over the top glittering accents you would not use every day. Or use natural items that are appropriate for the occasion like dried leaves and acorns for Thanksgiving or rose petals for Valentines day.

One way to change the look of a plain tablecloth is to add a transparent, shimmering Organza overlay; or sprinkle an assortment of sequences or glitter on top of the cloth. The idea is to make it special and different from what you would normally do.

To determine your tablecloth size, measure the length and width of your table and decide how much fabric you want to come down on each side....that is the drop. Add the drop X2 to the table dimensions and this will give you the size the cloth should be. For a formal look you can have the cloth go to the floor. If you add a leaf to your table for special occasions, remember to add the size of the leaf.

How to Remove Tricky Stains From Tablecloths

Our tablecloths come into constant contact with a multitude of potential stain causing hazards. Everything from candle wax to coffee and everything in-between can ruin our precious table coverings but never fear help is at hand. The purpose of this guide is to offer some helpful tips to remove or lessen those tricky stains.

So, after a special occasion or a family meal, you may find that your tablecloth has been splattered by various foodstuffs and drinks. Rather than leaving it looking tatty or throwing it away, let's look at some of the common stains, and how to deal with them.

Red wine

Spilling red wine on a tablecloth can seem like a major deal, especially if you don't deal with it immediately. Of course, in the real world it is unlikely that you will have the time or inclination to grab the tablecloth and scuttle off to remedy the problem there and then. Instead, boil some water and stretch the stained area over a bowl. Pour the boiling water (get help if needed) over the stain and you should see the red wine stain disappear. Once finished your tablecloth should be back to its normal colour.

Coffee and Tea

Like red wine, coffee and tea can leave a nasty stain on a tablecloth but there are some things you can try to help remove them. For starters, simply wipe the area with some water to lessen the effect (be careful not to rub the coffee or tea further into the weave of the fabric).

You can then use either vinegar, or baking soda to attack the stain. If using vinegar, fill a spray bottle with equal parts of white vinegar and water. Spray the affected area and then gently rub into the stain. If using baking soda, sprinkle the on to a damp sponge and rub gently. Once this is finished, rinse gently with cold water and the stain should have lifted. This can be repeated several times to remove stubborn stains.

Butter

If you happen to inadvertently, drip butter onto your tablecloth, your first port of call should be the saltshaker. Salt is great for soaking up the grease if used straight away and help prevent further soaking into your tablecloth. Another handy thing to try is artificial sweeteners, which have the same grease busting properties. Once the stain has dried, massage a small amount of liquid detergent into the stain and then wash it using whichever hottest setting the fabric allows.

Gravy

If gravy has been spilled on your tablecloth then the first thing you should do is mop up any excess gravy in an attempt to minimise the stain. Once the stain has dried, soak it overnight in warm water with the addition of enzyme detergent. The following day, wash or clean your tablecloth in the usual manner and the stain should have lifted.

Wax

If candle wax drips on to a tablecloth then it is important to wait until it has hardened before trying to tackle it. Attempting to deal with the stain while candle wax is still warm may result in the stain becoming worse.

Scrape the dry wax off the tablecloth using either your fingernail or a flat edge such as a butter knife. This should be done gently so as not to damage the fabric. Always try to work from the outside of the stain, inwards so not to make the stain worse.

Place a towel on to an ironing board and then put your tablecloth over the towel. Then take a paper bag or a sheet of brown paper (non-wax coated) and lay the paper over the wax stain. Using a hot iron to run over the area should result in the wax being transferred from the tablecloth, to the paper. Repeat the process as necessary until the wax has been completely removed.
