Recycling Your Old Appliance

Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle are three words that environmentalists take seriously. But these words resonate much farther than just in the environmentalist communities. Average people are well informed about the environment and are doing more to help protect it. Going "green" can be as simple as taking refundable soda cans to the local depot or donating clothes that your kids have out-grown. Other simple ideas include re-using old craft supplies or composting table scraps. But what about when you need to get rid of some really big household items? The 3 R's seem to become more complicated when you're faced with disposal of large items like appliances. Here are some tips to help you figure out what to do with your old refrigerator or stove.

Does your old appliance still work?

Maybe you've updated your kitchen and purchased new appliances but your old ones still work great. The first thing you should do is to check out your local donation programs. Many programs offer local pick-up service and have lists of families in need that would be happy to have a working appliance. Your neighborhood Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity are great places to start or you can also check out here for more information and charitable organizations.

You can also check out your local Bounty and Municipal Programs. A quick call to your electric utility will let you know if a program is available in your area. In general, the appliances must be working and meet certain conditions to qualify but if they do you could be in line for a nice little rebate. Your municipality will let you know if they will pick up your old appliance or where you can drop it off for disposal. To get more details check out the Environmental Protection Agency's FAQ on disposing appliances or call your municipality.

Refrigerants Need Special Attention

Refrigerators, dehumidifiers and air conditioners all contain dangerous refrigerants, like Freon, which can damage the ozone if not properly disposed. If you have one of these appliances and they are no longer in working order or do not qualify for one of the above programs, visit the US Environmental Protection Agency's website for tips on proper disposal. Never attempt to remove refrigerants yourself as they can harm you as well as the environment.

Keeping our environment safe and protecting it for our children is everyone's responsibility. Make sure that you evaluate all of your options before getting rid of your old appliances. Choosing the option that helps out your community and doesn't harm the environment makes everyone a winner.

Basic Designing Principles For Our Home

Any home would completely look extraordinary if the interior design was involved. There is certainly a big difference in walking within a well designed room. You would feel that everything was combined very well and then it would feel that everything is perfect. All of us are worthy to attain a home that appears very pleasing with just a little information about home designing. Here's what we need to bear in mind:

Rhythm and Balance
The rhythm is about the frequent patterns and contrast that produce visual attention. The main purpose of the rhythm is to catch your attention and make your eye move around the entire room. We can apply this further on the accent pillows, painting and even the rugs. Balance is merely the one that provides equalization in everything. Balance is for color, shapes, pattern and texture.

Harmony and Emphasis
Harmony is the element that binds each item in the room to create unity. For an instance, the Aico Monte Carlo furniture would blend well with the classy and stylish ornaments. This element gives a feeling of relaxation. Another tip of gaining harmony in a room is to pick one color shade whether for furnishings or for walls. Adding a special point of interest in a room is also important and that's why we need emphasis. The fireplace and the window with a great view is the common example of the room's emphasis. But, a nice set of furniture could also be a great emphasis.

Thinking and considering these things is a great start for the basics of designing our home. We should not just buy certain furnishings and decorations then mix and match them all. We should consider these elements to attain the happiness that we all want in our home.

Inspect Furniture Joints Before Buying

After wood the most important factor that determines the quality of furniture is the quality of joints. Good joining can make even average quality wood last really long. On the other hand, the best quality oak could also be rendered useless due to loose fittings.

All furniture is put together in a series of joints. Most structural problems involve joint weakening or failure. The joints used in good wooden furniture, such as Amish furniture, are usually stronger than those in cheap pieces, but age and abuse can take their toll even when the original construction was good.

Knowing the various joints used on a piece of furniture will help you evaluate the quality of a furniture piece before purchase. If you are a DIY type, having the following information will also help you repair them. Furniture bought online should be inspected in detail on delivery. If you buy Amish furniture online, you can be sure of high quality craftsmanship.

Dovetail joints: Dovetail joints consist of wedge-shaped openings, the dovetails, holding matching pins cut in the joining piece. In this joint, the dovetail goes completely through both pieces of wood. The pins in handmade dovetails are usually narrower than the spaces between the pins. In the older days only a few dovetails were used and the tails and pins did not match exactly. With modern equipment, the tails and the pins are exactly the same size and more dovetails are used in each joint.

Mortise-and-tenon joints: In this type of joint, a prong or tongue of wood, the tenon, is secured in a hole, the mortise, in the joining piece. Mortise-and-tenon joints are extremely strong; they're used chiefly in chairs and tables.

Dado joints: A dado is a slot cut into the face or end of a piece of wood; the joining piece fits into this slot. In a simple dado joint, the slot goes completely across the wood, and the edges of the joining piece are visible along the edges of the base piece. Dadoes and stopped dadoes have considerable shear strength and are used chiefly for shelving.

Lapped joints: Lapped joints are cut with both joining pieces notched or slanted to the same depth. Lapped joints offer a large glue area, but they aren't particularly strong. Cross-laps are used to join crossing pieces; half-laps and sloped laps are used to join the ends of long pieces. They're often used in drawer guide framing pieces and may be pinned with nails or screws from the back.

Butt joints: In this type of joint, the joining pieces are simply butted together with no integral fastener. Butt joints are weak and are sometimes fastened or held together with metal surface plates. They are used in chairs, tables, dressers, and cabinet pieces.

Miter joints: In a miter, the joining pieces are cut at a 45-degree angle and joined to form a right angle. Miters are used for decorative molding and for frames. They are very weak and are often reinforced with dowels, spline, or mechanical fasteners. Sometimes triangular glue blocks are used for strength; the blocks may be reinforced by screws.

Doweled joints: The doweled joint is a simple variation of the mortise-and-tenon joint, with dowels instead of a cut tenon holding the joining pieces together. Doweled joints require precision equipment. They are strong and are common in chairs, tables, and cabinets, usually on stretchers and other framing pieces.

Splined joints: In a splined joint, the edges of the joining pieces are grooved or dadoed to match each other and a reinforcing spline is inserted into the grooves to hold the pieces together. Splined joints are used chiefly to join narrow boards.

Rabbet joints: The rabbet is a reinforced butt joint, with one or both joining members notched to fit together. It is usually reinforced with screws or nails. Rabbet joints are easy to make and very strong. They are used chiefly for shelving and at the corners of cabinet pieces.

Drawer construction is generally a good indication of overall furniture quality. Doweled and dovetailed drawer joints indicate a high degree of craftsmanship. However, modern machine technology, good bonding glue and pneumatically driven staples coated with resin have afforded savings in construction while providing durability. The Amish craftsmen who make wholesale Amish furniture take very good care of the quality of the joints. Quality wood furniture purchased today can be used for a lifetime.

Bancroft Did Everything in Baseball Well

Dave Bancroft was never a bonafide star at any level of baseball, but the steady shortstop nonetheless had a remarkably long and successful career at the pro level.

Things started slowly for the guy they called "Beauty" (he would yell this to opposing pitchers in the minors). He played six seasons in the minors, and even by then he was still a raw, crosshanded slap hitter. He would later correct this fundamental error, and actually became a solid switch-hitter.

His first season, the Phillies won their first pennant in team history. Manager Pat Moran claimed Bancroft was the main reason for their success. He was a born leader, as he would later become the Braves' player-manager.

If ever there was a guy who could make a living doing the little things, it was him. His two best skills was slapping a ball in a hole (especially during hit and runs) and having outstanding range.

His glove will be the lasting memory of Bancroft's. He led the league in put outs a few seasons, and was also a very vocal leader on defense. His defense is what kept his teams in games when times were tough.

Nothing gave more credit to Bancroft's success as a steady player than when the Veteran's Committee inducted him into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. He never had flashy numbers (hit .279 with 32 home runs, 434 RBI and 145 stolen bases for his career), but he did enough in the voter's eyes to be named among the best ever.

Antler Chandeliers

Antler chandelier is an alternative type of chandelier being sold nowadays. Unlike other chandeliers, an antler chandelier is made up of an animal's body parts.

An antler is actually a bony outgrowth that developed from two protuberances on the skull of a deer, elk or moose. In the process of their growth, antlers are covered by a furry skin called velvet. Antlers are expected to reach their full growth in July or August after they have been supplied with oxygen and nutrients by a network of blood vessels.

During August, the blood supply to the velvet and antler is cut off due to the increase of testosterone production in male animals. Eventually, the velvet dries up and peels off. During September, the animals trash off their antlers against sapling trees. As winter comes by, testosterone production begins to increase again and this would cause the complete shedding of the antler. Mature males shed antlers earlier than younger males. The antlers that were shed off are the ones used to produce antler chandeliers.

A genuine antler chandelier is one that resembles a calcified tissue. It is not simply made up of horns that can be found on sheep, goat and buffalo. Since antlers are renewed annually, using them to make chandeliers is perfectly legal.

Antler chandeliers work best for certain types of rooms. Because of their look, they are capable of adding a rustic feel to any cabin that is located near the mountains. They also look better when partnered with couches and tables.

Owners of antler chandeliers have a traditional term for the light that comes from such furniture. They call it the "western glow." When a visitor wants the owner to light up the antler chandelier, he or she can say "Westernize." Antler chandeliers are also used to scare children by gently shaking the branches to create eerie shadow images against the wall.

Rugs for the Rookie Hollywood Criminal

According to Hollywood, most rookie criminals have no idea how they should transport their victim without leaving blood all over the place. Stumbling about, the first thing they'll probably think of grabbing will be a shower curtain or the living room curtains; like I said, they're rookies, or rather actors playing rookies! What these bumbling idiots should keep an out for lies underneath the body, a rug. Yes, a rug. Designed for easy storage and can be easily rolled up even with a body lying on top of it, it'll hold in place until you get to your destination.

Let's take a look at Hollywood and recap a couple common scenarios that can usually be found in an episode or two of CSI. Usually there's some sort of argument between a couple that has marital problems, or maybe it's a burglary gone wrong; whatever the scenario, there's going to be a dead or dying body bleeding someone. The antagonist who offed the guy will most likely panic for a second, figuring out how he should exactly transport the body from point A to point B. The solution: move the coffee table out of the way and roll him up in the rug!

But here's what these character actors should consider when researching their role as the betrayed husband or inept burglar: what kind of rug would be best for this situation? Wool rugs, bamboo rugs, nylon or even Persian rugs all have different qualities and piling, which matters if they're carrying a bloody body from their home to the back of their car. Even though bamboo rugs can be easily cleaned, they probably won't have enough strength to hold a 200 pound person. Persian rugs and wool rugs can easily be laundered, but it's nylon rugs that can handle heavy duty staining, which is what's probably used in those Hollywood murder scenes.

Assuming that you wouldn't actually emulate those bloody scenes and use a rug for any malicious kind of purpose, it's always a good idea to have a rug lying around to keep your floors protected from any scuffing or stains. Additionally, they're good to have in areas that have a lot of foot traffic as they'll keep those areas clean. And just because Hollywood seems to make a killing off of rugs doesn't mean that you should! Leave that to the special effects team!

Wall Mirror Expert Information

Wall mirrors can be found in many homes especially in regular bathrooms and dressing rooms. This is predominantly how wall mirrors are used for but this does not limit where mirrors are placed and we can now see mirrors in many other rooms other than the bathroom. We see them in living rooms where they accentuate the decor of the room, in front porches, walkways and practically any place one's creativity would lead them to place them. We even have entire walls and sometimes even buildings made entirely of mirrors. Even telescopes spot mirrors like the giant one that is aboard the Hubble telescope. Cosmic observatories which deal with the science of studying the universe also boast some of the most advanced mirrors in the world.

Originally, we saw mirrors made from materials and substances that were different from the glass that we know today. This was mainly because the modern glass-making techniques were largely unknown. Countries like Turkey, used what we know today as volcanic rock to forge mirrors that had reflective capabilities. These were further polished to create a much smoother surface that had reflective potential. Other tribes like the Mayans utilized polished stone to form mirrors and sharp instruments that could pass as weapons. The Romans then refine the technology using sand and created a crude version of the glass that we have today. Let us now examine some uses of mirrors.

The most traditional use of mirrors is for grooming purposes. We cannot imagine taking a shower, brushing our teeth or brushing our hair without a mirror. Other than the toilet seat, and the tub, the wall mirror is the most important aspect of bath area. Women use mirrors more frequently than men and there exists many instances where they go to the rest area just to "powder" their face and here the mirror is what draws them. In many hotels, there is even a "powder room" that exists solely for this purpose. Most women also carry powder boxes and make-up kits with them and they also need a mirror to be able to use these. Mirrors are also an integral part of the beauty industry and can be seen effortlessly in many spas, beauty parlors and salons not to mention barber shops.

Let us dwell on beauty shops for a little bit. It us unimaginable to find a beauty shop or a barber shop devoid of mirrors. It was not make an ounce of sense because the very purpose why customers frequent these places is so as to modify how they look. These mirrors are usually kept spotless using a variety of window cleaning detergents and sprays and this is so that they can portray th most accurate picture or image. Customers also rely on these mirrors, which are usually larger and more elaborate than regular mirrors, to see how their new hairdo has turned out. Mirrors are therefore as indispensable as the beauty salons themselves.

How To Be A Treasure Hunter

Are you a treasure hunter? Have you heard of the saying - One man's junk is another man's treasure? I never quite grasp the mentality of that until I met the wife of a fellow employee. This lady would scour the city and the countryside in search of bargains. She went to yard sales, garage sales, estate sales, thrift shops, flea markets, discount outlet stores, stores going out of business and the list went on and on. It was like she had built-in radar as she drove around; always keeping her eyes open for a bargain. She became so good at finding great deals, that anyone who knew her, would tell her what they wanted or needed and within a short period of time, she would find it for them. But it was not just the art of finding these bargains; she was also an expert negotiator. Rarely, would she ever give the asking price for her finds. One of her mottos was that if you offer less than they were asking, the worst that could happen, they could just say no. But you wouldn't know if they would take less, if you didn't ask. No matter what the price was, if they wanted 25 cents, she offered them a dime.

Her last several homes were completely furnished with bargains that she had found. Furniture, pictures, window treatments, knick-knacks, floor coverings, etc; everything that she needed was bargains that she had found. The entire home was furnished for literally hundreds of dollars, instead of the thousands that would have been spent buying brand new items. However, many of her finds were brand new, still wrapped in their original packaging materials. Her husband's closet was full of new or slightly used clothing. These were not old, out of style items; but new and up to date styles. I was a single father with three children, when I purchase a new home and she completely furnished my four bedroom home with each room having its own theme. Every time I entertained guests, they always complimented my décor. I could have never made my home look the way it did without her help and she saved me thousands of dollars.

We even had her decorate our offices at work. When she was finished, they looked very professional; like we had brought in an expensive interior decorator. She would sometimes find really good deals on furniture, rugs, draperies and other items; but she would have to pass on them because the color didn't match the décor that she was working on. Or maybe the material was blemished or faded. Then she made a wonderful discovery that allowed her to take advantage of these great deals after all.

She had seen a television program one night about remodeling and changing the color of your décor of your home. Thanks to the new formulations in aerosol spray paints, there are now spray paints that work on fabrics, plastics, wood, vinyl, metal and just about any surface or material. On the show she was watching, they were using spray paints in aerosol cans to make the fabric on a couch and a chair, look like new again. They even took an ottoman that was of a lighter color than the couch and chair, and made it match them identically with the same spray paint, that they had used on the other pieces. The drapes in the room were also sprayed to match the furniture. There were pillows that were sprayed with coordinating colors, along with a table cloth, placemats and napkins. The whole room had taken on a new look, not only renewing the colors of the furniture, but completely color coordinating everything.

There were a few simple rules and tips to follow when using the aerosol spray paints. Always follow the instructions on the spray paint cans concerning ventilation, safety precautions and the clean up procedures. You can also safely change the color of an item, if the original color is lighter than the color that you want to change to, this is especially true in fabrics. It is not recommended that you try and change a dark color to a lighter color, since you are actually dyeing or saturating the color of the fabric. But you should have success in going from a lighter color to a darker color. It is also recommended that you spray a hidden or not so easily seen area of the fabric for a test before attempting to spray the whole piece.

Not only can you change or renew the fabrics of your décor, you can spray paint your lamps, vases, picture frames, knick-knacks, and just about anything. And don't forget about other items that are leather, plastic, canvas, vinyl, wood or metal. There are even aerosol spray carpet dyes for carpets and rugs. Not only can you remodel or renew the interior of your home's décor, but you can do the same for your outdoor items on your decks and patios. This includes, but is not limited to patio furniture, flower pots and planters, barbeque grills, swings, fences and so much more.

Other popular remodel projects using aerosol spray paints are the interiors of cars, trucks, boats, campers and even your airplanes. The list is unlimited. So get out there and scour the country for those great bargains knowing that you can turn them into treasures that you can cherish for years to come with the push of a spray nozzle of an aerosol spray paint can. Happy hunting as you become an expert Treasure Hunter.

Cottage Style Decorating - A Cottage by the Lake

Have you ever spent your vacation at a cottage by a lake? If so, you know the relaxing and comforting feeling of spending time in a beautiful setting. The following is a reflection of the fond memories I have of spending a couple of weeks each summer at a Minnesota lake cottage.

What did I like about that cottage? I liked the simple casual décor which was a mixture of hand-me-downs and antiques that had been in the cottage for years. I liked the rustic feel of the paneling in the living room which had outlived its popularity.

The living room was a mixture of furniture including an antiqued open-shelf cabinet, a small rocking chair, and a heavy steel-framed couch. There was also a small, round antique ice cream table with two chairs. Colorful pillows added a nice touch to the cottage style decorating.

The kitchen had been somewhat modernized but still required hand washing dishes and getting ice cubes out of a tray! Another family member had "antiqued" the kitchen table using red paint and had also added red and white checked curtains and tablecloth to match. The table was a sturdy, square wooden table that was very durable. The kitchen also had a white wooden open -shelved cabinet which displayed collectibles and drawers which stored linens.

The bedroom had an antique dresser and chest as well as two double bunk beds. An oval braided rug completed the cottage look of the bedroom.

The secret to cottage style decorating is keeping it casual and having a feeling of friendly comfort as the goal. This feeling of comfort and relaxation was certainly evident in the "cottage by the lake." There was no sentiment of pretense or make-believe as the cottage was "what you see is what you get." For that reason it was a peaceful refuge from the hectic routine of life; a place to unwind, slow down and regroup until the next summer vacation.

Feral Cat Shelter Part 6.MOV

I used to put together shelters using 55 gallon Rubbermaid containers and 2 inch Styrofoam, but that became quite expensive. Recently, I learned how to make easy, inexpensive cat shelters from a great organization called Neighborhood Cats. Mine are slight variations from theirs. You can use your imagination to improve upon/change the design, as you like. Fish stores discard great Styrofoam boxes that vary in size. The ones I like to use are approximately 30" x 12" x 12". You just rinse them out, let them dry, and begin. This is an optional step: to give the shelters some weight and stability, you can attach vinyl tiles, or wooden boards (or anything else that is heavy and flat) to the top and bottom using GE Window and Door Silicone (or equivalent) and reinforcing with duct tape. If you make the top heavy enough, you won't have to place bricks on top. To cut a door, measure 2" from one side and 2" from the bottom. The door should be approx 6" x 5 1/2 ". Then you cut two pieces of 2" Styrofoam approx 12" long and 6" wide for the legs. Attach them to the bottom with GE Window and Door Silicone (or equivalent). Some web sites recommend making one side higher than the other and drilling a hole in the one (lower) corner to allow any water to drain. Another alternative is to keep the legs level, but to drill a couple of holes in the bottom so water can escape. You can line the containers with Mylar if you like for added insulation, but it's not necessary (especially if you have ...

"A Cat has Nine Lives" for braveheart Women by Debra Hadraba #19

Welcome to Honor Your Truth... "Is It True?" Series Episode Nineteen "A Cat has Nine Lives" I had a cat, but now he lives with Lonnie. Lonnie is a pistol packin, weed smokin carney that got busted. She came out of prison reformed and reborn. This 5 ft fireball, also known as Mama Lion, is a Christian and the first one to tell you so. She lives across the street from me in a house busting at the seams with all kinds of figurines. She fed my cat Joey just like she does all the other critters and birds in the neighborhood. One day, he went over there and he never came back. Whether it was the canned food, or the fact that I was always out of town, I dont know, but I never argued with this arrangement. He seemed so happy living with her and I could barely take care of a plant. I listened to story after story while sitting in her kitchen table. She brews a mean cup of coffee so I always make sure I havent had any coffee at all before I go for a visit. Her tablecloth is vinyl with little yellow flowers and she always uses cups and saucers. To be sure, she is one of the very few saucer users left in my town. People just arent saucer users anymore. I dont know where that tradition has gone, but everything has gotten so big and so fast. She has little spoons, chocolate treats, and coffee that will make you stutter. At some point in the conversation, I feel my hair stand on end and Im sweating. By this time, Im confused and not sure if its her stories or her coffee anymore. You ...

Adding the Zing to a Room

You have spent a lot of time and money on decorating and designing your room. It is beautiful, but it just does not pop. What can you do to add the extra special touch to the room to make it perfect. How much color is in the room? If it is a quit room, it may need just a little bit of color. I am not telling you to paint you wall red. Try adding a piece of art work to the wall. It will bring in all the colors into the room and make it blend. Try adding a few more pillows in the sofa or bed to bring in color. All of these are something the can be changed with the season and holiday.

In a kitchen add a colorful set of canisters, or place a pretty place on the wall. A pot with ivy in it sitting on the corner cabinet, dangling down a little ways. This will add that special touch to the room.

I also like to add a candy jar with bright colored candies of the season in a room. It is a personal touch that helps the room look lived in. Depending on the season, it can be a crystal candy jar, a box wrapped in Christmas paper, a pumpkin, or anything that you would like to add that little bit of color.

One of the new decorating ideas used a lot is having a planter with grass in it. this add a bright spot of green and is easy to care for. This works great in most all styles. It can be an orange planter for a contemporary room or a light blue for a country home.

Just remember, the smallest things can really make a big difference in the atmosphere of a room.

Coffee and End Tables - The Right Combination Can Be Stellar

When it comes to living room furniture two standards are the coffee and the end tables. They might match or simply complement each other, but without them you would just have a room with a sofa.

Coffee and end tables are used for many things from eating or resting feet to holding a cold drink or the remote control. The coffee table is usually in front of the sofa while the end tables are commonly nestled beside a chair or sofa. They are made of many things from wood to glass to wrought iron and travertine these tables can add subtle elegance or a punch of style to any loving room.

Sure you can trudge from furniture store to furniture store to department store to see what is available in the world of coffee and end tables. But the best way to see what is available is by shopping online. Browse through an eclectic selection of tables from wrought iron pedestals to wooden kangaroos in the comfort of your own home. It may even make it easier to imagine your new tables in the very room you're sitting in.

Choose from glass tops and marble veneers to a golf club pedestal or a rich cherry finish. Maybe you like the look of two smaller tables bunched together or one large one to make a contemporary statement. Whatever you choose, first and foremost make sure it fits in your living room.

Second make sure it matches your motif. You can pick tables that are conversation starters or tables that aren't too pretty. Just make sure the tables you choose speak to you and represent your personal style. After all you don't want your home to look like a picture in a magazine you want it to look like somebody actually lives there; you. You'll never be more comfortable than in a house filled with furniture that you love.

So before you pick a collection of coffee and end tables for your living room take a look around. What colors or themes do you want to carry through the room? Do you like shabby chic or Victorian? Maybe you are into the simple and clean modern look or maybe you would prefer something a bit more traditional? Once you have decided this than look for tables that match your color scheme. Remember if you pick something on the plain side you can always rejuvenate with a fresh coat of paint and some new drawer pulls.

You'll also have to make sure you get tables that are the right height for kicking up your feet or setting down your soda. You don't want something too low or too high. Once you have found your perfect tables the real fun comes in arranging your living room to get the most use out of them. Then you can sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful living room. You have a place for a lamp to read by and your magazines to pile up. You're living in high style.

Build Your Own Tiki Bar Easily And Quickly

You can build your own tiki bar with little knowledge. I will show you some techniques that will have you dancing as if you were on the beach. Everyone wants to bring a little piece of paradise home and this is one of the best ways to do it. If you have a pool you owe it to yourself to have your own tiki bar. It really adds to the feel of the atmosphere, alright enough about how great tiki bars are and on to the information.

Can I build a tiki bar?

The truth is just about anyone with a brain can build a tiki bar, and im not talking about a low budget bar. Im talking a real genuine get you drunk type of tiki bar, if that's what you're looking for that is. I will show you the basics that you need when it comes to building one.

The basics that anyone needs to know:

-You can use any type of old table, there's no need to buy some fancy table only to be it seem covered by a counter top or some other exterior design.

-You could also go the route of building the table yourself, you can do this fairly easily and get the supplies at home depot. You need to remember though the larger your tiki bar is the more expensive it will be to construct.

-There are methods of lowering the construction cost, use an old table you already have sitting around. Buy a countertop from home depot or even some sort of table cloth. That's one of the big things that people do not understand if you're going for a tropical atmosphere. You can use disposable table clothes; I mean tropical stuff relates to party items. You can find some great designs even at places like party city.

- Probably the hardest thing to find will be the materials for your roof, but this can be fairly easy to find if you live in a decent size city or especially if you live near the beach.

I actually have a full detailed guide on my free blog that shows you step by step instructions on how to build your own tiki bar. I could not possibly go over all the steps in this article, but for more information simply check out my bio box for my blogs link. Good luck on building that perfect tiki bar, and remember to have fun when doing it!

Feral Cat Shelter Part 4.MOV

Decorating Ideas For Kids Bathrooms

Since kids tend to start and end the day in the bathroom, giving it a "good vibe" is important. Bright colors and fun touches will help them start and end the day with a smile. But decorating a child's bathroom isn't all about fun, you want it to be functional, too. Making it easy for your kids to keep their bathroom tidy is an added bonus.

Since most bathroom spaces are small, save the murals for the kids' bedrooms. A lively shade is all that's needed to bring bathroom walls to life. Naturally, if you're going with a theme, it will dictate the color you choose. For example, turquoise is a perfect fit for an underwater scheme, a sky fantasy bathroom might have walls painted robin's egg blue, and a soft green makes the perfect backdrop for a jungle-themed bathroom. Stencils and vinyl decals let you add character to the walls, while a peppy-printed shower curtain pulls the whole look together.

If the bath/shower enclosure is glass enclosed, you can pep it up with vinyl window decals in fun designs. Be sure to use the type that adheres by static cling instead of adhesive. Otherwise, you'll spend a lot of time scraping old adhesive off the glass when your child outgrows the pattern. Another fun way to decorate a glass shower or bathtub door is to let your child design her own window "stickies" with a craft kit you can purchase at most toy or craft stores. Kids squeeze a gel out of a bottle and onto a piece of parchment type paper. It dries into a soft, rubbery type of plastic that clings to glass surfaces. Kids love both the creativity as well as taking part in decorating "their" bathroom.

Don't forget to add safety to your design list. Whether you choose a rubber bath mat or non-slip adhesive decals, make sure the bottom of the tub or shower your child will use has a bottom covering that provides traction. Make those decals or bath mats a bright color, and you'll draw your child's attention as he steps in, subtly developing a safety habit of looking where you step. Be sure, too, that any throw rugs on the floor outside the tub have a non-slip backing to keep kids from falling and hitting their heads on the tub. In addition, big, knobby clothes hooks will cause less head pain when bumped than pointed hooks. And, if you are adding a step stool to help little ones reach the faucet, be sure the bottom is equipped with non-skid rubber footings.

Seeking Inspirational Bathroom Interior Designs On A Budget

If you are on a tight budget you may think it is impossible to create
something stunning along the lines of the bathroom interior designs that are
always paraded in the glossy magazines on the newsstand.

But you would be wrong. There are many ways to use whatever cash you have
creatively in order to transform your bathroom into something wonderful. Use the
ideas that interior designs give you to create your own bathing heaven.

Choose Your Style

We tend to spend a lot of time in our bathrooms, so they need to be relaxing and
calming places to be. Interior designs employ many creative ideas to make the
most of what can be a small space, but you don't need to spend the same fortune
to achieve a similar effect.

The best way to make the most of a small budget is to take the minimalist route.
Along these lines can look sleek and inviting, and it can work out much cheaper
to keep the basic elements simple and then accessories to finish off the look.

If you are thinking of tiling, you could be very bold and tile everything in
white. Not only are these the cheapest tiles you can buy - they are often
available in bulk trade packs for even less money - they can add a pure Zen
feel, which can then be accessorized with candles and simple ornaments.

The other advantage of opting for white is that you can change the color scheme
of your bathroom quickly and easily by changing the accessories.
Interior designs for bathrooms often adopt similar tricks to enable quick changes to the feel and look of a room.

Using Ideas From Magazines

Whatever accessories you'd like to use, take a look at the
bathroom interior designs in magazines, showrooms and on the Internet before buying anything. There are usually much cheaper versions available of many of the objects on display, and some shopping
around should reveal some good alternatives to use.

It's becoming very popular nowadays to turn our bathrooms from a place to wash
into a retreat in which we can rest and recuperate, soaking ourselves in a bath
of bubbles before emerging reinvigorated. Perhaps the most soothing thing of all
is the knowledge that we don't need to spend a fortune to create a calm oasis in
our own homes.

Choose Rawhide Chandelier Lamp Shades For Western Interior Decorating

Rawhide and leather chandelier lamp shades are a superb option for southwestern or metal chandeliers and lights. Because they are an easy way to incorporate southwestern style that looks great with southwestern and Native American accessories, many designers are choosing to incorporate them in their design projects.

Sometimes you will see these kinds of lamp shades used on large lighting fixtures in hunting cabins, western homes, and steakhouse restaurants where a southwestern design style is used. You will most likely be surprised at how easy it is to incorporate western design into your interior design by simply using rawhide lamp shades on your chandeliers and wall sconces, or on lamps that need a smaller size southwestern style shade.

You will no doubt love the soft light generated by the natural color of the rawhide and the inviting setting it creates no matter where you decide to place it. Rawhide chandelier lamp shades are certainly the best choice when wanting to design an elegant look without loosing western design.

One big reason these rawhide lamp shades are so popular for Spanish style chandeliers and other home lighting fixtures is because of the many choices available. When using a specific color pattern, you have the option of choosing a pig-skin shade in one of many colors to match, or the natural warm color of rawhide.

It doesn't matter which kind of rawhide or leather chandelier lamp shades you need, you will no doubt be happy with the style you can accomplish with these shades. The fact that these leather shades are fashioned by hand, gives them a certain uniqueness you won't find in factory made lamp shades.

Because they are each constructed with a built-in bulb clip, you can easily change even the smallest desk lamp or table lamp into a stylish southwestern accessory. Try hanging a large Spanish style chandelier with rawhide chandelier lamp shades over an elegant dining table, or hung as the focal point in the living room of a rustic style cabin.

You will like how it remarkably enhances your interior, adding warmth and adding a look of the old west. It is the authentic leather and rawhide that brings out the quality of wood furnishings and southwestern decor items.

If you have been hunting for the right rustic lamps to pair with southwestern interior design, you will certainly enjoy the unique style you can achieve with leather shades. Because of their many different uses, chandelier shades can be used on lighting fixtures you already own, or on unique metal lighting fixtures.

Not only do western chandelier shades give you the option of transforming the style of your interior, you will also enjoy how easy it is to find them online. Find the right size shade for decorative lamps and chandeliers in several interesting styles and colors. You won't come across a better way to heighten the look of southwestern home decor than with the beauty of rustic rawhide and leather chandelier lamp shades.

Soundproofing Your Fence with Dr. Bob

So you have just purchased your home but when you first looked at it, you didn't realize just how bad the traffic noise in the backyard really was. Now you are committed to a 30-year mortgage and asks "What can I do Dr. Bob? Well, I'm glad you asked.

You can construct a soundproof or a sound-control fence. Now will this fence block 100% of the traffic noise? I'm afraid not, but will it make your backyard life tolerable? You bet it will.

There are some things that you need to know about building an effect sound control fence that will make it more effective. First and foremost, you new sound control fence needs to be 8 ft above the noise source. Now you need to check with your city or township to see if they have height ordinances regarding fences. If they will only allow a 6' high fence, you can always build an earthen berm to increase the height of the backyard where the fence will be erected.

Now lets talk about the fence itself. I recommend building a cedar or redwood slatted fence as high as possible, (8ft being the minimum height above the noise source). The term "Above the noise source" means simply this, if the noise is coming from an automobile muffler, then the fence technically needs to be 8' above the cars tailpipe. This should be simple enough. If you fence isn't exactly 8' above the noise source will it not be effective? Of course it will, but at the 8' level you will get the best sound blocking.

Let's talk about constructing your fence. The new redwood or cedar fence will have at least 4" X 4" posts mounted in concrete footings and sunk at least 2 ft into the ground. You will want as stable a foundation as possible for your new sound control fence as you will be adding heavy sound blocking agents to it. Once the posts are set and the concrete has cured, you will then add the fence cross members. These are generally 2" X 4" beams that connect the posts together and offer extra support for the fence slats. Now once the fence framing is complete, you will then be ready for the soundproofing membrane to be installed. You will have already called the professionals at Soundproofing America and ordered a product called "mass loaded vinyl". Mass loaded vinyl is a loaded vinyl soundproofing barrier that comes in rolls that are 35'x 4' or 30' x 4 ½'. Once you have your rolls of mass loaded vinyl and the acoustical caulk and tape that go with the MLV, you are ready to install the soundproof membrane for your new fence.

Your first step is to stretch the MLV along the frame of the fence, you want to make sure the that the MLV extends all the way down to the ground so that the sound does not leak though the bottom of your fence. Once the MLV is stretched across the fence frame, you will staple or nail the MLV to the frame. I recommend that you overlap the MLV by at least ½" and that you will liberally caulk between the overlap with acoustical caulk. You will also want to caulk the outer perimeter of the MLV membrane with the acoustical caulk. The next step is to tape the caulked Seams only with a PVC seam sealer tape along with the acoustical caulk.

As soon as the MLV membrane is secured to the fence framing and all the seams and perimeter have been caulked and taped, it is time to slat the fence. You will use 8' dog eared slats and but the slats as close together as possible, it is also a good idea to caulk the seams of the slats themselves, but this is absolutely not essential.

I would also recommend slats to the other side of the fence in an effort to protect the MLV membrane from the elements. This is a common practice, but once again is not essentials for good sound blockage.

One final note, some of my customers use a combination of both mass loaded vinyl and America mat closed cell foam as the septum for their sound control fences. By adding the closed cell foam you are adding sound absorption to your fence as well as the best in sound blockage. If you use both of these weather proof products, you will want to leave at least a 1/8" gap between the slats on the side of the fence that faces the noise source. In other words if you are using both America mat and MLV you will need to slat both sides of the fence and leave the gaps on the side facing the traffic for example. These septum fences work great for loud and obnoxious neighbors as well. I hope this give your new hope for having a nice quiet backyard.
