Twelve years ago, I set up my first home office, and many of my friends and family members were a little puzzled. "What will you do in there?" they asked, seemingly confused as to why I'd need a whole room instead of just a corner table where I could pay bills and store mail. I explained to them that I would be telecommuting, and they didn't quite get it. It was 1995, the term was little known in the business world, and people's reactions to it ranged from confused to suspect over the whole notion of combining home and work space.
Within a few years, all this changed. Most people learned more and more about telecommuting and home-based businesses, until it was accepted as a legitimate (and for many people, a preferable) way to work. Now, more than a decade after I set up my first home office, most people I know also have a fully equipped workspace in their homes, whether they work at home or not.
Today, people set up home offices for a variety of purposes, and many find that decorating these rooms can pose unique challenges. For instance, are there affordable yet attractive ways to contain inherently unattractive things like office supplies and files? And what kind of desk do you really need?
To begin decorating (or redecorating) your home office, think through some of the basics concepts important to this (and every) space:
Location. Will you need an entire room or just a portion of a room? For the heavy use home office, an entire room (if you have one to spare) may be warranted. Or you may want to create a combination home office/guest room using a spare bedroom. Also consider the type of space you'd like to work in. If you crave natural light and views of the outdoors, try to select an area where you'll have easy access to a window. Accessories. This may be a workspace, but don't forget: it's in your home, so you can decorate it in any way you please. Forget traditional office accessories like boring, Lucite desk clocks and bland art. Accessorize your home office with things that you love, whether that means framed Picasso prints, a collection of Cabbage Patch dolls, or sports memorabilia.
Storage. Things, things, and more things-where can you put them all? Think outside the box-the plastic black in-box, that is. Try baskets for files, books, even supplies. For a printer stand, consider using an old bench painted in the shade of your choice. An armoire (snagged on superclearance, of course) can house all your office supplies, and your filing cabinet can get an easy makeover if you toss a beautiful tablecloth over it. Business cards don't have to be slipped into a boring card file. I keep mine in a whimsical coffee mug a friend gave me one Christmas. They're neat, organized alphabetically, and always within reach.

There was a cross discussion among a few visitors as to whether the "stuff" which was left over from the previous owner was worth saving or should it be boxed up and tossed or sold in the Spring at a tag sale.
Deciding on What to Box and Dump
My first inclination was to box and dump.....but then I discovered two display areas that caught my attention. One was a book case that someone had started a fairly interesting display of ceramic planters, pottery, vases all grouped together by the same color of dark green with a touch of blue. It was a very handsome display. The second promising display section was a funky painted aqua Hoosier cabinet which was packed with odds and ends but could be attractive with the right objects displayed..
The Transformation Begins
So now I reconsidered my urge to dump (mind you ....it is not my store...I'm just imagining the possibilities). I studied the situation and took another look at the giant table that displayed the "junk". I started picking up all the yellow and pink items on this table and showed the young store owner how these "collectibles" might look in the aqua Hoosier. She caught on to what I was suggesting and took a bunch of pink plastic flowers and added them to one of the glass canisters that was missing a lid.
Within a few minutes the young store owner was on her way to transforming chaos into organization. By grouping odds and ends together by color, displays start to make sense. Bowls and casseroles without matching lids can be turned upside down and used as a "pedestal" to showcase smaller objects. "Better junk " can be intermingled with the bric-a-brac if there is an organizing principle.

5. Add excitement. Some displays look great with all the same size and color and some displays call for mixing up smalls with larger items or adding a splash of red or a surprise.. The question to ask your self is whether the display is static? boring? What does it need?
6 Keep Changing. Once displays are organized by color it is easy to add new objects to the section. On the other hand every now and then change your color combinations and move around the objects.
The table setting is one that you want to look as nice as possible. Not only do you want to have an elegant table covering, but you'll want to make sure that it adequately protects the surface of your table from being exposed to food and drink stains.
As a result, choosing a reliable tablecloth is integral in making sure that you achieve this goal. My personal favorite is the vinyl tablecloth, and I'll go into the reasons within this article. Hopefully your appreciation for this style will be on par with mine.

So, after a special occasion or a family meal, you may find that your tablecloth has been splattered by various foodstuffs and drinks. Rather than leaving it looking tatty or throwing it away, let's look at some of the common stains, and how to deal with them.
Red wine
Spilling red wine on a tablecloth can seem like a major deal, especially if you don't deal with it immediately. Of course, in the real world it is unlikely that you will have the time or inclination to grab the tablecloth and scuttle off to remedy the problem there and then. Instead, boil some water and stretch the stained area over a bowl. Pour the boiling water (get help if needed) over the stain and you should see the red wine stain disappear. Once finished your tablecloth should be back to its normal colour.
Coffee and Tea
Like red wine, coffee and tea can leave a nasty stain on a tablecloth but there are some things you can try to help remove them. For starters, simply wipe the area with some water to lessen the effect (be careful not to rub the coffee or tea further into the weave of the fabric).
You can then use either vinegar, or baking soda to attack the stain. If using vinegar, fill a spray bottle with equal parts of white vinegar and water. Spray the affected area and then gently rub into the stain. If using baking soda, sprinkle the on to a damp sponge and rub gently. Once this is finished, rinse gently with cold water and the stain should have lifted. This can be repeated several times to remove stubborn stains.
Butter
If you happen to inadvertently, drip butter onto your tablecloth, your first port of call should be the saltshaker. Salt is great for soaking up the grease if used straight away and help prevent further soaking into your tablecloth. Another handy thing to try is artificial sweeteners, which have the same grease busting properties. Once the stain has dried, massage a small amount of liquid detergent into the stain and then wash it using whichever hottest setting the fabric allows.
Gravy
If gravy has been spilled on your tablecloth then the first thing you should do is mop up any excess gravy in an attempt to minimise the stain. Once the stain has dried, soak it overnight in warm water with the addition of enzyme detergent. The following day, wash or clean your tablecloth in the usual manner and the stain should have lifted.
Wax
If candle wax drips on to a tablecloth then it is important to wait until it has hardened before trying to tackle it. Attempting to deal with the stain while candle wax is still warm may result in the stain becoming worse.
Scrape the dry wax off the tablecloth using either your fingernail or a flat edge such as a butter knife. This should be done gently so as not to damage the fabric. Always try to work from the outside of the stain, inwards so not to make the stain worse.
Place a towel on to an ironing board and then put your tablecloth over the towel. Then take a paper bag or a sheet of brown paper (non-wax coated) and lay the paper over the wax stain. Using a hot iron to run over the area should result in the wax being transferred from the tablecloth, to the paper. Repeat the process as necessary until the wax has been completely removed.
