But computerized embroidery usually involves more colorful patterns and more complex designs. Computerized embroidery applying the tone-on-tone technique is not so common within the world of digitizing.
Tone-on-tone embroidery is the a kind of embroidery involving an embroidery design that is of the same color as that of the fabric that it will be sewn on. A classic example is a white stitching on a white fabric, like embroidering white snowflakes on the curtains or bed sheets. It is an art that can be considered simple yet rich and sophisticated. These designs may be too bright or too dark for the tone-on-tone design to be visible to our eyes. It would be like it would have been better not to add additional designs at all. How to Be a Smart Dollar Store Shopper
Not every purchase we make is entirely satisfying. Recently, I had to return a winter jacket to Sears after only two months of wear because a couple of the seams had started to fray. But dollar stores seem particularly susceptible to criticism that "everything" they sell is junk. Personally, I can't agree with that, but I do admit that there are some things that dollar stores shouldn't try to sell for a buck or two.
An informed shopper is a smart shopper. So, if something in the dollar store looks too good to be true, maybe it is, maybe it isn't. How can you tell? Here are some tips that will help you to decide.
1. Touch it. If something has a nice weight to it, it will probably be a good buy. For instance, I don't buy hand towels if, when I hold them up to the light, I can see through the weave. But I've always found dollar store tea towels to be of excellent quality. If I heft a pair of metal pliers and they look and feel sturdy, the store has made a sale. And, I might add, I've been very happy with my small-tool purchases.
Glass vases and candle holders are usually always good buys. You can easily tell if the glass is flawed or has ripples in it.
2. Test it. Always check lids. Do they come off and go on easily? If they don't, leave that item on the shelf. My local dollar store recently started selling small, colorful wastebaskets with swinging flaps in the lids. The lids come off easily, but just try to get them fitted back on. They slide all over and refuse to snap back into place. Garbage day should not include a frustrating puzzle. On the other hand, the lids on the glass and ceramic canisters I've bought in recent months have performed beautifully.
3. Try the zipper. The zipper on a tapestry cushion cover I brought home last year would only open half way, making it impossible to use. That was, I suspect, just a fluke because when I tested the zipper on a similar cushion cover recently, it worked perfectly.
4. Check expiration dates on food. My personal experience with dollar store food has been favorable but I have heard complaints of infestations in cereals and rice or stale cookies. The simple fix is to check expiry dates on packages.
5. Be aware of varying clothing sizes. Most dollar stores sell some clothing. I like the socks but you need to be aware that sizes can vary from one pair to another. I've bought socks that were labeled size 9 women's that were far too big for me. The sport socks, on the other hand, are a good fit and long-wearing, although foot length does vary slightly between pairs.
The other thing I've noticed is that things such as camisoles and other undergarments are often a size smaller than what's on the label. So a medium would actually be a small and a small, extra small.
6. Learn from experience. A few months ago, I bought a flannel backed vinyl tablecloth for two bucks at the dollar store. It seemed perfectly sturdy. Turns out it should have stayed out of the kitchen 'cause It couldn't take the heat. Within a few weeks the color began to fade where hot plates had been placed and then bits of tablecloth started to flake off. It's unlikely that a new $2 purchase would perform any differently. Same for the plastic-handled can opener I paid a buck for. It fell apart the instant pressure was applied to the lid of a can.
Sometimes, these things are only flukes but, at dollar store prices, you can't be sure.
In my experience, "You only get what you pay for," isn't always true. Sometimes you can get a darn good deal for a buck or two. You just have to know what to look for and what to avoid. Often, the only way to judge something is to try it.

Vintage Crochet Patterns
Do you enjoy using vintage crochet patterns? I love going through the old magazines and seeing all the many uses of crochet hooks and working with yarn, thread, and rags, yes that is right; they even used rags to make rag rugs. I still remember the rag man coming to our house to buy old clothing by the pound. He carried a scale with him and paid by the pound.
It seems they took more time back than to personalize their homes. Not that we do not put our own personal touches in our homes today, but how many times do you find a crochet hot pad in today's kitchen? A finely crocheted tablecloth on the dinning room table or chair arm and head covers crocheted from a beautiful filet crochet pattern? The doilies were always a thing of art and a fine touch for the homemaker.
There were crocheted curtains, potholders, shelf edgings, place pats and table runners. Beautiful bedspreads were my favorite. This is not to mention any of the clothing the women of days gone by made for their families.
Ok I admit some of the touches of the 1970s were a bit wild and I am very glad those years and patterns are long gone. No I never had a desire for a crocheted toilet tank covered to match my orange and green toilet paper cover. I am not sure where those pattern ideas came from, but I can guess.
But lets move back into the 1930s, 1940s and the 1950s. I think these were the times when a home was a warm safe haven to be decorated and cared for with love and pride. There was more time to create and it was common for a woman to know how to knit and crochet. Now do not misunderstand me, I do not think todays woman is any less of a homemaker than back than. But the women had more time to put themselves into the creating of the home environment and the many personal comforts and special touches.
I would like to have this section for free vintage crochet patterns. There is so much history and beauty in the crochet past to find and share. We do not want the patterns to disappear with age and be forgotten. Some of the old patterns will be a bit confusing because of the abbreviations they use. So hopefully this list will help a little in those cases.

Baker Was a "Home Run" For Baseball
When you hear the name Frank Baker, even some baseball historians will say "Who?" That's because no one referred to him as Frank after a while, but simply Home Run Baker. He had a remarkable, yet somewhat short run in baseball that left him regarded as one of the best third basemen ever.
Baker first played for the Philadelphia Athletics for seven seasons. While there, he was part of the $100,000 infield, which included Stuffy McInnis, Eddie Collins and Jack Barry. They lead the Athletics to 4 American League Pennants and 3 World Series titles. As great as the defense was, it was Baker who became a great home run hitter for his time.
From 1911-1914, Baker led the American League in home runs. It was in the 1911 World Series that he got his nickname, as he hit a home run in back to back games to wrap up the series for the Athletics.
His numbers for a power hitter look pretty pedestrian by today's standards, but his 48 home runs in 7 seasons for the Athletics made him one of the most feared sluggers ever in the year early part of the 20th century.
Baker would play six more seasons, all with the Yankees. He would win two more pennants with them, but no World Series rings. His best season with them included a 10 home run, 83 RBI campaign in 1919.
The Veteran's Committee found Home Run Baker fit for induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, and he continues to be praised for his skill at the plate in the dead ball era.

How to Decorate With Kitchen Curtains
If you have a plain or neutral kitchen you can really have fun choosing some great kitchen curtains and using them as a starting point in your kitchen design and décor.
1. Decide whether to go for Warm or Cool Colors
If your kitchen is mainly white, black, grey or stainless steel then choose cool colors in your kitchen curtains - they are the bright pure shades as well as all shades of blue and purple as well as pure white, black and grey.
If your kitchen has been based on natural shades such as terracotta, wood, beiges and creams then you are looking at warmer colours - mustards, sandy shades, oranges, browns and dusky greens - nothing too sharp or bright even in the yellow and green ranges such as acid lemon or lime green.
2. Select a Fabric with a Pattern
Choose your curtain or curtain fabric to match the desired color range, style and mood of your kitchen. For best results make sure there are several colors or shades of a single color in the fabric.
If you want a contemporary look go for a modern plaid, multi-stripe or an abstract pattern. Floral is good for a country look. For a retro kitchen try and find curtains or fabric which would have been used in that era (even if it would not necessarily have been used in the kitchen).
3. Pick some Colors and Have Fun
Tie your kitchen design together by picking out two or three colors from the fabric for your kitchen accessories. Here are some ideas
Upholster your kitchen chairs (or add some cushions) in a plain fabric to match one of your colors.
Buy a large platter in one of those colors and leave it on display or put some matching china in a glass-fronted cabinet.
Make sure your kitchen towels, apron and oven gloves coordinate too.
Don't just have everything matching in an unimaginative way (like having everything in red) - play with the colors in your curtains.
Maybe use the same colorful fabric in a tablecloth and keep a (colored) jug of complimentary flowers on the table too.
Hang some pictures on the walls in the general color theme too - though you may want to avoid hanging anything too expensive in a kitchen where steam and grease will eventually spoil it.
Once you get started I'm sure you will find lots of ways to coordinate your colors and you will often spot new items when you are not looking for them - try and carry a sample of the curtain fabric with you when you go out.

How to Set the Perfect Thanksgiving Table
The holidays are fast approaching with Thanksgiving only a few weeks away and we are starting to think about preparing our family feasts. Whether you are serving a small family of 2 or extended family of 20, you can have the picture perfect Thanksgiving table. Your Thanksgiving table can be casual or elaborate as you want.
Setting your Thanksgiving table starts with the perfect picture in your mind. The colors of fall are beautiful and intertwined. Choose your colors for your table linens. Personally, I start with a solid color table cloth and compliment the table cloth with a harvest style runner, very eye catching.
Keep in mind the colors of your dishes, compliment the dishes with your corresponding table linens. You can choose a printed table cloth and solid runner or solid table cloth and solid runner, or a solid table cloth with a design embedded, remember that picture in your mind.
Table Padding helps with the setting of your perfect Thanksgiving Table. Not only does the table padding protect your table finish from liquid spills, hot spots, scratches, dents and nicks it helps to absorb sound and gives the tablecloth a gentle flowing drape and prevents the tablecloth from sliding or pulling.
Table padding is made of felt and vinyl and the soft backing is safer for many modern finishes. Table padding comes in many sizes or can be cut to the size of your table or cut longer to include the drop or overhang.
Need help figuring out what size and shape of tablecloth you need? Tablecloths come in square, round, oblong (rectangle), and oval.
Do you know the difference between and oblong and oval tablecloth? Many time people confuse oblong with oval. An oblong tablecloth is designed to fit a rectangle table with square corners and an oval tablecloth fits an egg-shaped table.
Do you know how to figure out your tablecloth size?
Measure the width and length of your table. Add the overhang or drop, which is how long the tablecloth will hang over the side, typically the desired overhang is 10-12 to lap level on dining tables and 15 inches for banquet tables.
Once you have these measurements, add the overhang times 2 to each measurement of your table. You don't want the tablecloth to be too long. Your guests should be able to be able to sit and not have the tablecloth touch their legs, you don't want anyone pulling that tablecloth!!
Example: If your table size is 30x72 inches and the desired drop is 12 inches you would figure it this way:
12 inch (drop size) X 2 would be 24 inches
Add the 30" (from your table measurement) to the 24" (doubled desired drop) = 54 inches
Add the 72" (from your table measurement) to the 24" (doubled desired drop) = 96 inches
The perfect cloth size for your table would be 54 X 96 inches. Tablecloths typically come in standard sizes you would then select the size closest to those figures.
Something fun....Tablecloths date back to Medieval Times when people travelled from village to village and castle to castle. During these trips food items were carefully wrapped in cloth. Upon arriving at their destination, they would place the cloth on the table, unfold and prepare for their meal. The unfolded cloth now served as a napkin were the persons dinning would clean their hands and mouths during the meal. At the end of the meal, the remaining food items were re-wrapped in the same cloth.
I happen to be a big fan of Table Runners. Table runners are sometimes called "scarves" and are pieces of material that run lengthwise or across your table. Table runners can run within the dimensions of a table or extend into the overhang.
Table runners have been used for centuries to decorate tables, sideboards and buffets when not in use. Heirlooms were displayed on runners, such as candlesticks, centerpieces and bowls. Table runners have come along way, today they are used for decorations, and are a big trend in table setting.
I think Table Runners add character to a table setting, especially at Thanksgiving and the holidays. They can be used to complement your table linens, used as decorations, to hide a leaf or just let your imagination run wild.
The Charger is making a big come back on tables. The charger makes a table look more elegant, whether serving dinner to your family or entertaining the guests.
Chargers are simply under plates that are used at each place setting of a formal table. The charger will be larger than the actual dinner and salad plates used to hold the food. The dinner plate is never placed on the charger. When you are shopping for chargers, place the salad plate or soup bowl, not the dinner plate, on the charger to see how it sizes and coordinates.
Historically, chargers were used in the best of restaurants to hold a place at the table before the diners arrived. This also aided in the setting of a elaborate table. Without a place for the plate, it was difficult to place the silverware properly. Once guests were seated, the plates were removed and the dinner process began.
Today, a charger is still used as a marker, but is used when dinner is served in courses. The appetizer, soup, and salad plates are placed on the charger, creating and elegant look and the charger also helps to keep the area around the diner clean before the entree is served.
The charger should compliment the choices of china, silverware, and décor of the table setting. A charger may be used with or without placemats, depending on your table setting.
The use of the right charger can add a touch of elegance to the table. By coordinating the design of the table setting, the color choices, and the pattern used for the china, the charger will beautify other pieces and create a sense of an elegant table setting.
A napkin is a napkin or is it?
There are so many things that you can do with a napkin.
Napkins are a piece of material (made of cloth or paper) used to clean the lips or fingers and for protection of clothing. Napkins can be made of a variety of fabrics including cotton, linen, silk, and cotton/polyester blends. Cotton, Linen, and Silk napkins are typically used for more formal settings while cotton/polyester blends are used for casual everyday dining.
Turning a plain piece of cloth into an exotic swan for instance, brings back my many days in the catering business. Napkin folding can turn your table into an elegant work of art and it is an easy and fun task. Not into napkin folding, then napkin rings are the best thing. There are napkin rings for anyone budget and taste.

Most of us know how to set a table, but for those that need a little refresher here is an overview...For those who never went to finishing school or who don't set a formal table on a regular basis, let's start with a quick overview on how to set the table:
* Forks should go on the left and spoons and knives to the right of the plate.
* An easy way to remember the correct order to place utensils is that they go in the order in which you use them; so the salad fork goes on the outside left while the larger fork used to eat the main course goes on the inside left. * If you are using chargers, place the salad plate and/or soup bowl on the charger.
* Place the side plate or bread and butter plate to the left of your place setting;
* Place the wineglass at the tip of the main-course knife. The water glass and any other glasses should be arranged in the order they will be used with the first one on the outside.
* The napkins can go under the knife and spoon or on the side plate. If you choose to use napkin holders or fancy folds, the napkin can go on top of the charger plate set up or even in the water glass for a more decorative and elegant place setting.
Truth be told...I leave this to the kids, who have a great time trying figuring out who sits next to who. It's a great touch to create and decorate place cards.
Place the cards either on the charger plate setup or better yet in attractive place card holders which are placed on the charger plate setup or directly on top of the charger plate setup.
Using place or name cards adds a finishing touch on your Thanksgiving Table Setting.
What do you say about Glassware? There are so many styles and shapes that just can boggle the mind. Most importantly, set a water glass, wine glass if you serve wine or alcohol and for the more adventurous, a stylish shot glass for the tradition after dinner sambuca with coffee beans.
Finally, for an extra special touch, you could leave a small gift at each place setting. If you shop around in dollar discount stores you can find all kinds of small gift items. Wrap them and use ribbon to give them a holiday look. You could even place the name cards in a frame for your guests to bring home. Opening the gifts will make a great conversation starter when everyone sits down at the table.
Decorating your table with a Harvest Centerpiece or Cornucopia will give your table a Thanksgiving feeling. Candlesticks are another great way to decorate your table and add a flair of elegance.

Tips For Arranging and Decorating a Buffet Table
Setting a buffet table up requires some careful planning. There are a few things you need to think about, such as traffic flow, food, tableware, ease of access to the food, etc. before you get started. Everything needs to be set so that guests can easily get around the table and access the food they want. If you are going to be serving a lot of guests, you may want to consider having more than one buffet table set up. If so, then make sure there is plenty of space between each.
Place the food and silverware on the table(s) where they can be easily accessed by all guests. You shouldn't place all the silverware, napkins, plates, ice, etc. in one spot. Add them in a few different spots around the table to make the flow of traffic go more smoothly. This way, guests won't have to bump each other out of the way just to grab a spoon or a napkin.
You can use accessories on the buffet table for both functionality and style. Such accessories can include napkin holders, utensil holders, cup dispensers, and so forth. Keep the appetizers and desserts in baskets. Make sure the holders, dispensers, and baskets are all made to be sturdy so that they won't get knocked over easily. Also, arrange everything neatly on the buffet table so that the display will look nice and everybody will be able to grab whatever they need without any problems.
Be sure that there is a clear indication of where the line starts at the buffet table. All the food should be arranged so that guests can get everything without having to backtrack. If you are using more than one table, place the food in order in accordance to table order. Most people start off with the main course; move on the vegetables, salad, bread, and finally desserts.
Part of the table arrangement should include decorations. Cover the buffet table with a neat tablecloth or runner that matches the theme of the event. The centerpiece shouldn't be so high that your guests can't see each other over top of it. It's up to you whether you want to use a really nice, fancy table covering. If you do, keep in mind that people will more than likely spill drinks or food on it, so use a clear covering to protect it.
Follow these tips and you will set your buffet table successfully! Just don't overcrowd it with too many dishes, condiments, glasses, and decorations. Not only is an overcrowded table a recipe for disaster, it also looks sloppy. Sometimes less is better.
