Soap supplies are needed to make soap, but are also needed to keep you safe while making lye soap. It can be very rewarding when you have the right soap supplies to complete your job. There are a lot of different soap supplies to choose from.
Lye soap has been a popular hobby for many people around the world. While lye soap is a great type of soap, it also is a very dangerous type of soap. If you want to have a fulfilling and worthwhile experience making soap on your own here are a few soap supplies you need to stock up on:
a.) Vinegar: Vinegar is a great item to have on hand when making lye soap. It does a wonderful job neutralizing spills you may have, and stops harm from happening to the surface it came in contact with. Be sure to have vinegar on hand in case of spills.
b.) Newspaper: Be sure to use newspaper or a tablecloth you do not care about to cover your table. Lye soap can cause a lot of damage to a table or working surface if it makes contact with it. If at all possible, try to do your work outside if you can in a well ventilated area as well so you do not have to worry about toxic fumes going inside your home.
c.) Plastic, wood, and glass: Be sure to use plastic, wood or glass containers when making your own lye soap. Lye reacts poorly to aluminum and copper pans and can even cause a bad chemical reaction. Stay safe and avoid using metal utensils as well.
d.) Plastic spoons: As mentioned above, metal does not work well with lye. Instead of using a metal spoon, try using a wood or plastic spoon. Also, when using the spoons, try to keep the oil and lye spoons separate so you do not have to worry about any other harmful chemical reactions.
e.) Soap molds: Having soap molds can make your soap process much more enjoyable. It is up to you what you would like to use. You could form soap in an empty paper cup if you would like. My favorite are the candy molds.
f.) Safety: Remember that safety is an important part of successful lye soap making. Always wear gloves and protective goggles. Oven mitts are also essential if you decided to make the soap the heated way.
