Customer Service 101

There are a lot of components to running a successful business. If you're dealing with the public, ensuring quality customer service can be the most important since it can make or break a deal.

So, how high does your business' customer service rate? Start with the most basic type of customer service and consider whether you are doing enough to make it easy for your patrons to reach you. If they call your business, do they get a machine or a receptionist?

If you use an automated phone service for your business you may want to reconsider. It's a tough decision since it may be more affordable that having a receptionist. However, few things are more annoying than not being able to get in touch with a person when you're having a problem. Many large companies rely on automated phone systems, much to the dismay of customers.

It pays to make to take the hassle out of getting through on the phone when it comes to maintaining customers.

If your business is sales, you may want to make sure your customers are well informed as you usher them toward closing the deal.

Let them know all the details and fine print ahead of time so they aren't surprised following the sale. This will ensure the likelihood that they will be satisfied and become a returning customer.

Do what you can to make sure each transaction is a smooth one. Build relationships with your customers so they will know what to expect from each transaction. Why lose a customer over an avoidable miscommunication?

Obviously you want your customers to be happy. Satisfied customers tend to buy more, are open to new products you might offer and may be a great source of referrals. It may cost a little more to maintain great customer service but it will benefit your bottom line in the end.
