A Brief History of Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are very interesting dogs. Their exact origin is unclear. Some stories suggest that it is a retriever that is part coon hound. Others suggest that it is part retriever, part English water poodle. Regardless of its origins, however, everyone agrees that it is a fine dog for hunting all sorts of bird game, especially in colder water.

This breed has several unique attributes that make a difference and mean it is the best breed you could choose for tough outdoor bird hunting. For starters, it's smart and has a great memory. It's able to remember the location of a good number of birds.

It also will go into the water, even very cold water, without hesitation. This breed enjoys the water. It's enthusiasm for water of any temperature sets it apart even among retriever breeds.

Next, the dog has a coat uniquely suited to cold-weather bird hunting. The hair in its coat is thick and it handles wet, cold environments very well.

Lastly, it's stamina is exceptional. These dogs are tireless bird dogs. They could literally run all day long. If you add all the benefits up, you should be unsurprised at how popular this breed is with hunters.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are not the perfect all-around pet however. These dogs are not friendly compared to some other retriever breeds like goldens and Labradors.

They are great for hunting but not so good in a family environment because they can be physically aggressive and get into fights. They also are not terribly affectionate.

As a bird dog, though, you'll find no equal to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, especially if you plan on hunting in cold weather. They are excellent at all of the tasks you need in a bird dog.
